Mariana Straton – lead teacher
I have trained in Mindfulness Based Approaches with the University of Bangor’s Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice (Teacher Training Level 1) and with the University of Exeter (Teacher Training Level 2 – Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy). I fully adhere to the UK Network for Mindfulness-Based Teachers Good practice guidelines for teaching mindfulness-based courses and I continue to develop my teaching skills through a supervised pathway with University of Exeter.
I have led 8-week mindfulness courses, introductory courses and drop in groups in the community and in the workplace
More recently, I have completed teacher training in Mindful Self Compassion (MSC) with its founders – Dr Kristin Neff and Dr Christopher Germer. This course is fairly new in the UK. I am teaching my first MSC course in October 2016 in Gloucestershire.
My interest in the secular applications of mindfulness and compassion training stems from my long-standing personal meditation practice. This is mainly informed by the somatic practices of Tibetan Buddhism and Zen and it has greatly enriched and expanded my teaching. I regularly attend insight meditation retreats as well as professional workshops as part of my continuing development and practice path.
My professional background is in social work and I have worked in statutory children’s services. I continue to be registered as a qualified social worker with the Health and Care Professions Council in England. I have also worked in other positions within public services.
I believe in our human richness and our resourcefulness to nourish ourselves and truly connect with each other and our planet.
